Planning a trip to Alaska? Chances are your cruise or road trip will take you through Ketchikan—the “Salmon Capital of the World.” Phillip and I stopped here on our Alaska cruise, and let me tell you, this little town is full of charm, culture, and jaw-dropping scenery. If you’re wondering about the fun things to do in Ketchikan Alaska, this Nana-tested list of the top 10 experiences will help you make the most of your visit.

1. Explore Historic Creek Street

Once a bustling red-light district, Creek Street is now a colorful boardwalk lined with shops and galleries perched over the water. If you’re lucky, you might spot salmon swimming upstream. I would recommend stopping there first after you dock to beat the rush. That’s what we did and there were only a few people there which made taking pictures a breeze. Later that day we passed by and it was so crowded.

A fun note about Creek Street: One of the side paths is called Married Man’s Trail. The name comes from the days when married men lived above Creek Street but would sneak down at night to visit the brothels—hence the not-so-subtle name!

Head a little farther up the creek and you’ll find a salmon ladder. It’s the perfect spot to watch the salmon fight their way upstream. Keep your eyes open—you might catch sight of playful otters or even a bear stopping by for a snack.

2. Visit the Totem Heritage Center

Ketchikan has the largest collection of totem poles in the world. This center preserves original 19th-century poles and tells the stories behind them. It’s a fascinating stop and a great way to learn about Native Alaskan culture. You will also see totem poles in downtown as well, so be sure and grab a picture or selfie.

3. Take a Seaplane or Boat Tour of Misty Fjords

They don’t call it Misty Fjords National Monument for nothing—picture towering granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and clouds that drift in like a soft mist. We took a boat ride through it all, and it was absolutely breathtaking. The day we visited Ketchikan was an unseasonably warm 67° and sunny, with just a quick 15-minute shower. Truly the perfect weather to soak in the beauty of Misty Fjords!

4. Watch the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show

This is a touristy stop, but so much fun. Lumberjacks compete in sawing, chopping, log rolling—you’ll laugh and cheer the whole way through. Perfect for families. The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show is near the cruise dock so easily within walking distance from your ship.

5. Go Salmon Fishing or Try a Salmon Bake

Ketchikan isn’t the salmon capital for nothing! If you love fishing, you can book a half-day charter. If you’d rather eat than catch, the salmon bakes are a treat. There’s plenty of salmon fishing tours to chose from, either from your cruise ship or locally at the visitors center. With so many fun things to do in Ketchikan Alaska, it can be hard to choose where to spend your time. Whether you’re into history, culture, or just want a taste of fresh salmon, each stop on this list offers a little something special.

6. Visit Saxman Native Village

Just a short ride out of town, Saxman Village has a beautiful collection of totem poles and cultural performances. Great for history buffs!

7. Hike Deer Mountain Trail

If you’re up for a little exercise, this trail gives you sweeping views over Ketchikan. Bring a light jacket—it can get chilly even in summer. Also, you might consider wearing waterproof shoes or rubber boots.

8. Browse Local Shops for Alaskan Art & Gifts

I picked up a carved ornament and Phillip grabbed some smoked salmon to take home. Local shops have everything from handmade jewelry to quirky souvenirs. You’ll find plenty of shops that sell t-shirts, hats, candy, popcorn and other Ketchikan flavored items. Infact, there’s so much to see, it may be hard to squeeze it all in!

9. Stop by the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center

This makes a perfect “first stop” when you arrive. You can pick up maps, check out the exhibits, and get a quick overview of the area’s history, culture, and wildlife. Plus, it’s a great way to spend a little time if you’d rather wait until the crowds thin out before heading to Creek Street.

10. Enjoy Fresh Seafood on the Waterfront

From crispy halibut fish and chips to fresh king crab legs, the food in Ketchikan is delicious! Annabelle’s Famous Keg & Chowder House is always a solid choice, but honestly, any little diner along the docks will hit the spot. There are plenty of local gems, so you really can’t go wrong—it just depends on what you’re craving.

The main thing when you’re visiting Ketchikan is to have fun, eat, and take plenty of pictures!
